November 27 – November 27

Seminar: Contemporary Scene Shifts

Why do contemporary dramatists want to be in the art space? What experiences do artists gain from the theatre? The seminar’s invited participants all move between visual art and theatre. They reflect on how the institutions of the two fields function today and discuss obstacles and possibilities for collaborations across boundaries.

During the evening Keren Cytter and Andrew Kerton’s performance work Poker Face, named after Lady Gaga’s super hit, will be performed. The work depicts the story of an entertainer who is killed by their alter ego.

Participants:
Sara Arrhenius is director of Bonniers Konsthall and curator of the exhibition Scene Shifts, which runs from 29 September to 9 January.

Camilla Eeg-Tverbakk (moderator) is an artist, curator, theoretician and writer. In the 1990s she worked as an actress and director at independent theatres in Oslo.  A graduate in Performance Studies at New York University, she has curated and produced several festivals and international guest performances in Oslo. She teaches at the Norwegian Theatre Academy in Fredrikstad.

Caroline Elgh is assistant curator at Bonniers Konsthall and has worked with the exhibition Scene Shifts, which runs from 29 September to 9 January.

Heiner Goebbels is a composer, artist and director, living in Frankfurt. He has worked as a composer since the 1970s. In the 1990s he began developing large staged concerts, which led to experimental and innovative music theatre. Heiner Goebbels has presented works and sound installations in art exhibitions such as Documenta in Kassel in 1997. His first opera, Landscape With Distant Relatives, was premiered in 2002.

Sofi Lerström is a producer at Dramaten&, Dramaten’s new venue for experimental theatre and music.

Mellika Melani is a Swedish film director who has received much acclaim for her productions, including Rigoletto - djurisk åtrå (Uppsala City Theatre, 2008) and Ulrike Maria Stuart by Elfriede Jelinek (Teater Tribunalen, spring 2009). In September she premiered Elfriede Jelinek’s Babel at Göteborg City Theatre. Her productions have often questioned the form and function of theatre, and she has moved towards the art world, for example in projects at Tensta Konsthall during the autumn.

Helena Seth is responsible for side programming at Dramaten&, Dramaten’s new venue for experimental theatre and music.

Markus Schinwald is an artist living in Vienna and Los Angeles. In his works, he studies the body’s movements and gestures. In painting, film, performance and sculpture, he explores how stage props, costumes and prostheses can affect the body’s patterns of movement. Markus Schinwald is one of the artists in the group exhibition Scene Shifts at Bonniers Konsthall.

Andrew Kerton will perform the performance piece Pokerface during the seminar.
